Al-Jame-al-Aqmer, considered to be the pearl of Fatemi masjid in Egypt, was built
in the year 519 Hijri, by the 20th Imam-al-Amir-be-Ahkamillah (AS).
While al Aqmer is smaller than other Fastemi masajid, it is distinguished by the
detailed splendour of its façade. The rich decor covers the portals as well as the
entire façade opposite the qibla. The façade contains two symmetrical wings to the
left and right of the main entrance, where the muqarnas makes its appearance in
the masjid. The façade of al Jame al Aqmer is aligned to the street along which
it was built.
Al aqmer is the last living testimony to the Fatemiyeen in al Qahera. Ravages of
time left the masjid in a state of ruin and the right wing of the façade was completely
destroyed. By the will of Allah, in the year 1416 Hijri, it was restored to its
former glory by al Dai al fatemi Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS).
Extolling the glory of al Aqmer Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS) said,
"All this (the process of restoration) is the Barakaat (blessings) of al Anwer,
and now al Aqmer. Allah has made it possible for us to restore it. It is a small
masjid but it is a rare gift of beautiful art. Historians refer to the sentiments
that it inspires, such that
the eyes are filled with its beauty,
the soul is fortified with the strength of its workmanship,
there is awesome splendour in its design,
its inscriptions are replete with hidden meanings,
its engravings are a delight and joy to the eyes."
